Overhead crane operators must be familiar with proper operation, rigging, signaling and maintenance of cranes.  For this purpose, they must undergo training, which prepares them for the various challenges on the jobsite.  The duration of the initial training is typically four days depending on the type of crane that the operator will operate.

Typical training consists of classroom theory and practical lessons.  Many trainers, corporations and government agencies recommend that you take accredited crane certification tests such as NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators).  Once you pass the written and practical exams, you will receive certification.  This certification will serve as proof of qualification and often help you obtain work as an overhead crane operator.

Here we will discuss overhead crane training requirements for the successful completion of training.

Overhead Crane Training Requirements – Recognized Training Source

As per the guidelines issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), overhead crane training should be obtained from qualified sources.  There are numerous sources you may consider for your training.

When choosing to take certificate training instead of certification training, make sure that the training company you select meets OSHA and ASME requirements.  Otherwise, your certificate will be of little value.  Furthermore, you can’t be completely certain of your skills as an overhead crane operator if your training is not complete and compliant.

Experience

There are various aspects of the job of an overhead crane operator.  Apart from operating the crane, it is necessary to maintain and inspect it regularly.

When it comes to overhead crane operation, exams are the best way for employers to identify properly trained crane operators.  However, exams are only an indication of what you have learned by experience and training in crane operation, maintenance and inspection.  Therefore, experience is an importantoverhead crane training requirement.

Examination

Overhead crane training is incomplete without examinations.  You will be required to take both written and practical tests to document your ability.  There are many overhead crane operators who have paid their dues in this field but still desire to obtain certification from NCCCO or another accredited testing organization.  NCCCO, the largest accredited crane operator and rigger testing organization, is recognized nation-wide.  Let’s discuss the requirements for written and practical examinations.

The written test comprises of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions covering inspection, safety measures, operations and maintenance. The time-limit is 60 minutes.

The practical test involves lifting a test weight and then moving it through an obstacle course. This is also a timed test.

Overhead Crane Training Requirements – Physical Ability

You must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for the NCCO certification.  Overhead crane operation can be a physically demanding job at times.

To ensure that your physical ability matches the overhead crane training requirements, you need to attain a doctor’s certificate meeting the Department of Transportation requirements for medical examination.  Once obtained, this certificate will be valid for a period of two years.  You will also be required to pass a drug test.
