Overhead Crane

What are the Requirements?

The objective of overhead crane training is to instruct crane operators in the proper operation and maintenance of overhead cranes.  It is usually offered in the form of four days of classroom based instruction and practical exercises.

Overhead crane training includes both written and practical exams to help ensure safe and efficient crane operators.  One source for verification of operator skills and training is the National Commission for Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).

Under guidelines issued by OSHA, (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) the overhead crane training must be obtained at from a qualified source.  The following are some more requirements for the certification process.

Certification Process in Overhead Crane Training

Experience

You must have the practical experience in the maintenance and operation of overhead cranes.  You also need to have adequate experience in inspection, which is as important as safe operation.  According toNCCCO guidelines, only experienced overhead crane operators qualify for crane operator examinations.  These exams are administered by an accredited examiner.  A national certification is awarded to overhead crane operators who pass the appropriate exams.

Many operators of overhead cranes have a proven track record of success.  However, they may need to obtain a national certification as well.  They may also have to be licensed by the state to operate cranes.  OSHA allows only qualified overhead crane operators to operate overhead cranes.

Physical Examination

The minimum age requirement for the NCCCO certification is 18 years. You must have the physicalability to meet the challenges of overhead crane training. For this purpose, you can obtain a Department of Transportation physical certificate from a medical examiner.  This certificate will be valid for two years. Additionally, you are required to pass a drug test.

Written Examination

The written examination is conducted by the NCCCO. It consists of a total of approximately 60 multiple choice questions. Those questions cover various aspects of training such as safety checks and measures, overhead crane operations, and maintenance. The duration of the written examination is 60 minutes.

Practical Examination

The practical examination is conducted using one of the following types of overhead cranes; cab-operated, pendant controlled or remote controlled.  It is composed of four overhead crane operations.  The applicant uses a test-weight, which is to be lifted by the crane and put into a circle.

Then it is to be moved along a corridor, and through an obstacle course in the test area.  All these operations are to be completed within the given time limit.  In order to qualify for the certification, you must pass both written and practical examinations.

Crane Operators without certification in Overhead Crane Training

If you do not have sufficient experience operating an overhead crane, there is an alternative way to qualify.  You can continue to work as an operator-in-training.  This way, you can perform your duties under the supervision of a qualified overhead crane operator designated by your employer.  Typically you must complete your overhead crane training within four years.
