Different types of cranes complement human efforts in almost every field like heavy manufacturing, construction, oil rigs and power plants that requires regular loading, off-loading and movement of heavy loads.

Without a properly functioning crane or crane operating system, regular operation in most of these industries would be severely compromised. So if you are using cranes in your daily business operation, it is vital that you employ both an experienced crane operator and a trained crane signal person.

Signal person training equips your staff with proper knowledge about the limitations of individual cranes and how to communicate clearly with the crane operator for smooth operation of the crane and optimum safety of all staff involved.

Importance of a Signal Person

To get the most out of your cranes while ensuring maximum security when operating them, it is important to employ personnel who have undergone signal person training courses. Operating a crane is not a one man job.

In most cases, crane operators do not have a clear view of ground crew moving around, obstructions to the path of movement of the load, and they do not know the exact position of where the load needs to be lowered. He works as part of a team where the signal person is his right-hand man.

The most important aspect of a signal person’s job is clear and precise communication. It is he who guides the crane operator where to hoist and lower heavy loads and when the crane can be moved. Even the slightest miscommunication from the signal person can lead to serious accidents that may be fatal.

Benefits of Signal Person Training

Proper signal person training enables the signal person to interact with the crane operator in a technical language they both understand. The signal person uses standard hand signals outlined by the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) to convey information to the crane operator.

When using hand signals is not feasible, a trained signal operator will know how to use voice signals and radio to communicate properly. He will also know how to use non-standard signals to convey information when standard hand or voice signals don’t work.

Features of Basic Crane Signal Person Training

A basic signal person training course educates trainees about standard hand signals and voice signals approved by the ASME and OSHA.  The training course provides rudimentary details about the mechanics and limitations of crane operations, guidelines on non-standard signals and essential safety procedures.

This short duration course usually lasts between four to eight hours and at the end of it, the trained signal person must undergo written and practical examinations. On successful completion of both exams, he is given a Signal Person ID card along with a completion certificate.
